Matthew is a Partner specialising in construction and commercial arbitration and litigation in the UAE and internationally. He has acted as counsel in numerous construction and commercial arbitrations, both ad hoc and under the rules of the major arbitral institutions, including the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), DIFC-LCIA,  the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), and UNCITRAL.

Matthew is a Solicitor-Advocate qualified in England, a registered Legal Practitioner of the DIFC Courts, and conducts advocacy in international arbitration proceedings. He also sits as an arbitrator.

His main practice is in handling complex high value construction disputes, in both domestic and international arbitration and litigation in the DIFC and Dubai Courts, acting for developers, contractors, sub-contractors and consultants in all types of construction projects. 

He also advises clients in commercial arbitrations and litigations in other industry sectors including energy, oil and gas, real estate, tele-communications, and shareholder disputes. 

Matthew has also represented both governments and multinational companies in investment treaty arbitrations and advised on international law issues and protection of foreign investments. Matthew was notably part of the team that successfully represented Eurotunnel against France and Great Britain, the first arbitration brought against two States simultaneously.

He has written extensively on international arbitration including for Global Arbitration Review, ICSID Review, and Euromoney Guide to the World's Leading Experts in Commercial Arbitration. He also co-authored both the UAE chapter and the England & Wales chapter for the publication “The International Arbitration Review”. 

He has also spoken at a number of international conferences and seminars. Matthew regularly delivers legal training sessions as part of the Dubai Legal Affairs Department’s CLPD programme, in particular on “Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitration Awards in the UAE, DIFC and ADGM”.   

Prior to joining Hadef & Partners in Dubai, Matthew worked for major international law firms in London (including Herbert Smith LLP), and obtained an M.A. Hons in History and Law from the University of Cambridge (Downing College).
