UAE law firm Hadef & Partners was awarded ‘Property & Construction Team of the Year’ for 2013 in the Corporate Counsel Middle East Awards (CCME) ceremony, which was jointly held by Legal Week and the Corporate Counsel Middle East Group at the Westin Mina Seyahi hotel on Thursday 16 May. The CCME awards celebrate legal excellence in the Middle East and are open to in-house legal teams and law firms operating throughout the region.

‘Care by Air’ is a UAE non-profit, logistics-related charitable initiative which was established to support the country’s humanitarian role across the globe. Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the initiative has already made a huge difference to the work of relief organisations as they can now rely on private business partnerships to help them deliver aid where it is needed throughout the world.  Hadef & Partners involvement in supporting ‘Care by Air’ was recently nominated as Corporate Social Responsibility team of the Year Award in the Corporate Counsel Middle East Awards 2013.

In any M&A transaction, the final stage of signing the acquisition documents is often the most frantic period during the acquisition process, as the parties strive to agree the final drafting and terms of the principal acquisition and any relevant ancillary documents. We have noticed that insufficient attention is often given to whether certain conditions precedent and pre-completion obligation mechanics can be readily achieved in a manner that is both practical and reflects the way in which businesses operate in the GCC. Conversely, some points are not considered in sufficient detail in the acquisition agreement which can also lead to a transaction potentially fraying during the period between signature and completion when the parties discover that by finally considering the detail, there are still important points which need to be agreed.

Amid concerns that the UAE’s public sector is close to employee saturation point and that the Emiratisation quota system in the private sector has done little to minimise what has now in effect become a two-tier market employment structure (a public sector comprising predominately stet UAE nationals; and a private sector, of foreign labour), Mandeep Kalsi reports on the Minister of Labour’s recent and highly publicized initiative to re-balance this increasing divide, with the private sector being placed firmly in the spotlight for change.

The landlord and tenant relationship in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is governed by Law No. 20 of 2006, Concerning the Rent of Places and Regulation of the Landlord and Tenant Relationship in Abu Dhabi (as amended)(“the Landlord and Tenant Law”)The provisions of this law which deal with the rights of the landlord to increase the rent, and the rights of the parties to terminate or extend the lease, have been amended in recent years and it is hoped that this article will clarify the meaning and effect of the recent amendments.
