The UAE is a federation of seven Emirates situated on the Arabian Gulf in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula. The Emirates are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain. In recent times, expatriates flocked to the UAE, attracted by the lifestyle and economic opportunities available in this oil-rich, tax-free country, and now make up more than 80% of the population. The UAE has recorded one of the highest population growth rates in the world over the past two decades, sustained by an economic boom as the UAE grew its petroleum production capacity and diversified its revenue base into tourism, trade and services. The UAE's current total population is estimated at about 5 million.
